Specifically, a true calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise one
milliliter of water from 4C to 5C. A "food calorie" (or "Calorie", with a
capital C) is actually 1 kilocalorie. Similarly, a British Thermal Unit is
the amount of energy needed to raise 1 British pound of water by one degree
Fahrenheit.
