I like ham, but hate overly sweet versions of it.  And I flat-out
despise yams with marshmallows.  blech.
So...what kind of chef do you want to be? Are you going to specialize in
a certain cuisine? or type of food, like a pastry chef? Will you go to
culinary school?
18 was a _very_ long time ago for me, but I still remember how
queasy/exciting/etc. it felt to be legally adult, and go off on my own
adventures.
