Didn't they do something with pancakes in Europe on Fat Tuesday? Seems like
I remember something along those lines.

It is indeed a modern hold-over in the Gulf Coast region. The
carnival season begins on 12th Night & culminates on Mardi Gras, the
day before Ash Wednesday. The general idea is to get it all out of
your system & have a last big bash before having to give up fun things
for Lent. Depending on who you ask Carnival roughly translates to
"farewell to the flesh".

During modern Mardi Gras celebrations, a ring-shaped King Cake is
served. Inside the King Cake is a plastic baby Jesus. Whoever gets
it has to buy the King Cake next year, & usually throw the whole
party.

I'm a misplaced wanna-be-New-Orleanian. I visit whenever I can. The
whole culture is fascinating. Someday I'll have a house there.
Someday.
