I checked OED and "moon" as a verb and
"mooning" seem to be modern AMERICAN terms...
 1960's is what is given... You may
want to put the phrase in quotes...
As to your story, I didn't find anything in
my collection of bread books. You might want to
look at the two volume set Special & Decorative Breads
by Bilheux, Roland, et al which I have read covers
shapes and traditions associated with various rolls.
