Butchering/slaughtering, etc (was Re: [Sca-cooks] Handling special diet needs at feasts)

Please, don't y'all get confused...
Butchering = Cutting down a piece of carcass into smaller pieces, useable
cuts of meat.
Slaughtering = Killing a live animal in order to eat it.

The difference is *big*.  I'm sorry if I'm being somewhat anal retentive on
this, just can't help it.  I've had too many people thinking me a monster
when I talk about butchering, when they think I'm talking
slaughtering...  (not that I've never slaughtered anything <g>)

But Maire does have a point, lots of folks who've done/witnessed slaughter
tend to be somewhat more respectful of the whole thing.

I remember a student of mine (mind you, this was an adult), was
flabbergasted to learn that the package of ground beef she bought at the
store came from a live cow at one point...  <sigh>

:-)  me, I'll eat anything that moves, except missionaries, as a West
African friend of me used to say.  You can't render them tender enough to
eat ;-)
