Cabbage, brussel sprouts and broccoli are all variants of Brassica oleracea.
Botanically, they and cauliflower, kohlrabi, kale, collards, and etc. are
slightly different versions of the same plant.
Turnips are Brassica rapa. The rutabaga is B. napobrassica.
All of the Brassica are heavy in sulphur compounds which give them the
bitter taste.
