Probably related. Keep in mind that the cuisine of the southern half of
Italy was heavily influenced by the Catalan Court in the 14th and 15th
centuries. A usage of the word has evolved to refer to the sofrito of
today's Catalan cuisine, which includes New World ingredients. Still, a
modern sofrito starts with caramelized chopped onions.

The period Catalan term was used for the technique, though, not a reference
to a specific condiment or sauce base.
