I don't know if I'm really "from the South" or not.
But I do know that my mother was a woman raised in
Oklahoma who picked cotton with the Negros during the
Depression. The family is about as White Trash Southern
Jerry Springer Soul Food Eatin' Catfish Giggin' Let's
Go Shoot Sumptin' It's Nice That Merle Is Outta Prison
In Time Fer Christmas Okie as you can get.

I was raised poor and ate a lot of beans and cornbread,
greens picked from the side of the road, fried 'taters
and ham and chicken fried in a 100 year old cast iron
skillet. (My only inheritance.)

I guess you could consider me culinarily Southern.

I like cornbread either way. Sugared is great by itself
or eaten as a bread with the meal. Unsugared is great
with beans or as part of the dish.

Some folk feel that one way or the other is heretical
but folks from the same town in the South will eat it
either way.
