Having had lunch with the Dame in question less than
two weeks ago, I can happily report that Baroness Kay of
Tre Asterium,O.L.; O.P. is alive and well and living
in the Midrealm.

Ancient Cookery is Arundel 334 and was published
with Warner in 1790. It's located in the British Library.
It's dated XVth century or 15th century. [Warner was
the edition of the FofC that Prospect published in that
nice limited facsimile.]

Checking that edition-- the recipe is on page 79
Boor in confith... yes that's the long s.

the phrase here is "lye in merfaufe (in foak) an houre"

I'm betting the "mersaus" is somebody's misreading of "verjus": the
edition I'm looking at uses one of those "s" 's that looks like an
"f", sans serif, and all, and this could easily be mistaken for an
"l".
