Not necessarily the world's best documentation, but the actor Art
Carney, in his role as Ed Norton, in one of "The Honeymooners"
scripts, refers to "an avocado salad pear", which suggests the
expression was in common use in a lot of the U.S.A. (even distant
Brooklyn) in 1955 or 56.
