You know, I really dislike this particular strategem.  I know a lot of cooks
like to play with chocolate, and find it a really easy way to make subtleties
and such, but darn it, there's enough cool stuff available in period to
ignore it and do something that is better recreation.
And the act of having someone in power "declare it period" is just wrong.

I have to agree with you. However, being my usual nitpicky self, I will
note that at least as told above, the Crown of Atlanta only declared
what is proveably true. Chocolate IS period. It is even period for
Europeans.

I suspect though that the people of Atlantia have simply mis-interpreted
the Good King's words to think that their king was talking about some
sort of chocolate that has gone bad and has solidified. For surely, the
King would not ask his subjects to eat something that was changed from
it's natural liquid state to an abnormal one using supernatural means.

All normal chocolate is drunk as a liquid refreshment and contains
ground chocolate beans and various exotic spices and peppers from
the New World.
