There must be a thing with grandfathers and cornbread. Mine loved to have
something called "soak bread"...when I was growing up, I thought he was
saying "soap bread" and couldn't imagine anyone eating, much less liking,
bread made with soap! At any rate, what it was was a chunk of my
grandmother's wonderful cornbread with pot liquor (the liquid/broth) from
her greens or green beans poured over it.

But the thing that he did that really drove me nuts was that he would take a
piece of cheese toast (had to be made with the sharpest cheddar around) with
a spoonful of grits on top, then that would be topped with maple syrup. I
love all of the individual ingredients...but together??????
