Yes, that is probably the most common way of combining the two (Yuk!).
My wife's family (from Pittsburgh area) would put grated cheddar in the
pie itself.  Then again, she also likes peanut butter and bacon
sandwiches.

Now my family always liked dunking peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in
tomato soup - but then there's nothing wrong with that.
