<Funny how the old traditions remain--my dear old Dad used to do just
that with the roast beef...put a slice of bread (normal, Arnold's type
white bread, or bakery rye) on the serving plate under the roast before
he began cutting.  Then we would fight over who got the drippy,
juice-soaked stuff.>

My Father did much the same. He'd take the knives, the cutting board and
several slices of bread to the table, but HE got the bread!
