Couple won't go on holiday without 30-year-old meat pie

A Lancashire couple have been taking the same meat pie on holiday with them
for the last 30 years.

Tony and Alicia Johnson were given the overcooked pie by a baker as a joke.

Since then its travelled 500,000 miles on holidays and on RAF trips to world
trouble spots with their sons.

The couple, from Bacup, say 'Pie' has become one of the family. They will be
packing it in their luggage when they set off on a cruise around the Greek
islands this week.

Mr Johnson, 63, said: "Pie first came into our lives 30 years ago. My
next-door neighbour runs a bakery shop and the meat pie had been left in an
oven overnight and was somewhat overdone.

"It quickly became a source of amusement and began travelling abroad with us
on holiday."

Pie has been to Las Vegas five times, Barbados four times, most of Europe,
Kuwait and the Falklands.

The couple always send a postcard from Pie to its maker, Hollands' Pies, the
Daily Mail reports.

Hollands say the pie has managed to survive because the juices ran out of it
when it was overcooked - forming a protective varnish.

When it isn't travelling Pie sits on a stand on the couple's living room
mantelpiece.
