I've come across three different versions of this song with different
tunes and slightly different words: the Old Woman from Wexford
version that the Clancy Brothers sing, the Steeleye Span version, and
a version sung by Richard Dyer-Bennett which was recorded during or
before my childhood. I think they all include the lines: "but if you
want to do him in, creep up from behind." I haven't come across any
period version of the story, though.
