We use the term Solar as well, but we are generally referring to a location
set up for folks to sit during the day, visit, sew, eat, whatever. When we
were in England and Wales, we saw the extant Solar of castle Gydwelli. It
was on the top floor of a tower, so that the maximum amount of sun would get
in. The ladies of the house would sit up there and sew, spin, watch the
kids, etc.
