I can remember eating it as a child, as well...we used to call it "Pappy
Yokum" for the comic strip character from "L'il Abner"...yes, I know...I'm
showing my age again!!  But it WAS a great strip!!

I have also used tapioca as a thickener for fruit cobblers...works very
well.
