Yes and no.  The "benecodde" is obviously a bean cod or pod, however it can
not be a member of the genus Phaseolus, as they were not introduced into
Europe until 1492.  Fava beans have a pod as do the members of Vigna
unguiculata (cowpea, yard long bean, etc.).  Prior to its use as a genus
name for New World beans, phaseolus appears to have been used as a common
name for members of the genus Vigna.

In common usage in Spain and Italy, cowpeas (black-eyed peas) are lumped in
with the New World beans, despite their Old World ancestory.
