I usually have abysmal luck with air mattresses.  This method has been
working:  (for a full-size airbed) Tie two cots together and put either
"egg crate" foam rubber or old carpet (backing side up) on top.  Then put
the air mattress on that..    The foam keeps the mattress from sliding.
It also helps that the cots collapse down for easy packing too.

Of course, they now make airbeds with the cot frame built in...
