Welserin refers to these as "Spanisch baches."  This suggests that the basic
idea of these pastries came from Spain.

Since the Welsers were involved with the Portuguese spice trade into Central
Europe and the Spanish explorations in the New World, I have no problem
believing that Sabina Welserin pastry did originate in Iberia.

If you think about Spanish pastry types, this recip[e is very similar to an
empanada.
