MATTERS OF TASTE: Food and Drink in 17th Century Dutch Art and Life


September 20 – December 8, 2002; Second Floor Galleries



Organized by AIHA, this loan exhibition drawn exclusively from American

museums and private collectors will include more than 50 Dutch paintings

depicting images of food and drink.  Guest curators Donna R. Barnes and Peter

Rose bring together perspectives from art history and culinary history. Still

life and tavern scenes, market scenes, kitchen scenes and scenes of festive

occasions by more than 30 artists such as Jan Steen, Adriaen van Ostade, Jan

Davidsz. de Heem, Pieter Claesz., and Willem Claesz. Heda will be included. 

Also included will be cooking utensils and ceramic tableware along with Dutch

and colonial American printed and hand-written recipe books passed down by

Dutch-American families living in the Hudson Valley.
