I believe the real reason it was named New York
was because it was formerly called New Amsterdam,
and the new owners didn't want a constant
reminder that the founders were Dutch, not
English.  Also, New London was already taken.

But give me cool, rainy weather any day.  You can
have this 105 degree weather, even if there is no
humidity.
