Recently there was a discussion on sugar. I just found this definition of Raw sugar that I thought might be of interest to some.

Ilia

"The residue left after sugarcane has been processed; similar to brown sugar in color and flavor, but may contain contaminants such as molds and fibers. True raw sugar is unfit for direct use as a food additive according to the USDA. The "raw" sugar marketed in the United States has been purified, which invalidates much of what is thought to be its greater nutritional value. The coarse-textured dry Demerara sugar from the Demerara area of Guyana, and the moist, fine-textured Barbados sugar are two popular types of raw sugar. Turbinado sugar is raw sugar that has been steam-cleaned. It has coarse golden crystals and a subtle molasses flavor."
