All this talk about hot peppers brought an old tale to mind. My ex and I used to garden a lot. One year he saw some drooping tomato and pepper plants outside a shop. He went in and made an offer for the tomato plants and the store owner told him to "take them all!" It turned out most of the peppers were jalapenos. My ex loved hot stuff I can't tolerate.A friend of mine gave me a salsa recipe her family loved. I made the first batch according to the directions. "Seed the jalapenos" and use 3/4 cup chopped. The recipe made 6 pints. Of course, *I* didn't know if you seed the peppers it takes out most of the heat. The first batch was very mild. Ex said, "Not hot enough."Next batch 3/4 cup unseeded jalapenos. Ex again said, "Not hot enough."Batch #3 I used 1 1/2 cups chopped jalapenos. Too hot for me. Ex said, "this batch has a little flavor." I'm pissed off now. I remembered Chipotle chilis (smoked jalapenos in adobo sauce) I'd tasted in Mexico. Way too hot for me. I found an 8 oz can in the Mexican section of the grocery store. Batch #4 I blended the 8 oz can of chipotles and added to the same recipe as #3, carefully not getting any on my skin. My eyes watered the entire time the batch cooked. Took a sample to the ex. He took a big spoonful and placed it in his mouth. Before he could even swallow, his face turned bright red and sweat popped out on his forehead. "That's hot enough," he finally choked out.Reminder: don't diss the cook. Liadan
