this has worked for me, but YMMV......

if onions are baked/broiled they are easier to cut than if boiled.
however, if you boil an onion.......

place the onions on a fine mesh or peirced grate.  not big enough holes for
the onion to "sag" into, but enough to let air under them and water
drippage....
failing that rest them on a kitchen towel.
let them cool

now, using the very sharpest knife you have, that is at LEAST twiice as long
as the onion is wide, cut the onion in half using one long pulling stroke
toward you.
watch the fingers, but try to hold the onion on each side.....

you can then turn the onion and do it again for "quartered onions"
