[Sca-cooks] Medlars

Greetings,

Does anyone on the list have any experience cooking medlars?  Are they 
worth it, or is this a fruit that was cooked in period because they 
were around and people were frugal?

I'm tempted to get a medlar tree, but the whole bletting thing (letting 
the fruit rot slightly to make it edible) sounds awkward and its 
occasional nickname ("open-arse fruit") is rather unappealing.
