I hope this wasn't the case. I would hope that some one in that
position, and a Peer at that, had learned a bit more diplomacy than
that.

Why? We really don't need to offend the press. We already have enough
trouble with stereotypes and the "wierdness" angle to worry about. If
you wish to control the situation, there are probably a lot better
methods to do so than offending folks, especially the press.

You don't want the press running hither and yon taking pictures without
some control and guidance. Privacy concerns and SCA image among several
reasons. However, it can be done without a heavy hand. And perhaps then
everyone wins. No, this won't work with all press folks, but you don't
have to start out making enemies.
Sometimes not being obnoxious can lead to dividends. Aleksandr the
Traveler comes to mind. He was assigned to cover the SCA for a news
story. He ended up joining the SCA and has been playing for a number of
years.

Yes, but there are specific reasons to use the larger, more
professional medium format cameras. A better quality picture among
them, especially if you are making enlargements. Asking someone to
forgo their use is like asking a cook not to use period spices or an
archer not to use a wood and horn bow because it would draw extra
notice.

If I've misinterpreted what you said please correct me. Or write me an
article on how you think the press should be handled at SCA events.

And how did your relations with the press go? Can you tell us which
outfits might be doing stories on this last Pennsic so we can keep our
eyes open for them?
