Well, your description of the lake made me think of Loch Ness, which 
is why I asked. That, and the fact that Weird NJ Magazine (a classic 
publication, BTW), as well  as their website, is featuring material 
on the Tom's River Monster, affectionately known, of course, as 
"Tommy".
