The Oxford Symposium on Food & Cookery 2004 will take place at St. Antony's
College, Oxford from Friday 3 through Sunday 5 September 2004. This year's
subject is:
Wild Food: Hunters and Gatherers

Papers are requested on any aspect of these subjects. A major theme of the
meeting will be biodiversity, but contributions are welcome on specific wild
foods, such as furred or feathered game, hedgerow fruits, foraging for
fungi, fishing and so on. Topics could range from research into the nature
of Biblical manna, to the current status and harvesting of wild rice, to the
sometimes covert present-day cultivation of truffles, especially T.
melanosporum. What are the economics of trading in wild foods (some of the
wholesale trade in truffles is black-market)? Is the market in wild foods
sustainable? What is the economic role of wild foods in places such as
Eastern Europe, China and Greece, where they form part of the daily diet of
many of the population?
