[Sca-cooks] Cooking period foods resembling modern foods

The concept of eating a little bread for
breakfast, as you mention, is not so different
from the continental breakfast still offered
today. I have not been able to find precisely
when the Dutch served their pancakes and waffles.
I have found many paintings of them making and
eating such, but it is not clear to me what time
of day it is in the paintings. The only
illustration that might gives me a hint is one
called "Twelfth Night Feast", which has a plate
of waffles amongst all the other offerings.
There is also a lit candle in the drawing, so I
guess that one could presume it was at night.
However, pancakes and waffles are bread products
and it wouldn't be too far a leap to say that
they could be the Dutch equivalent of a little
bread for breakfast. Just don't include maple
syrup.

In keeping with the subject line, I suppose you
could buy frozen pancakes and waffles from the
store, but IMHO they are dreadful and akin to
eating warm cardboard with maple syrup.

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for they
shall never cease to be amused.
