>Dinner was a quiet roast beef and potatoes.

You know, many would argue that a noisy or talkative roast beef would
positively put most people off their food. How about one that sings
in a squeaky voice, just slightly off-key? Or squeaks when you poke
it with a fork?

Fear knows not logic... but I sympathize. What comes as a shock is
not so much the scare, but the fact that we've gotten away from it as
long as we have. This seems to be one of the few cases in which the
fast food industry has collectively acted to alleviate a problem
(never mind that they have, in large part, created or contributed to
the severity of the problem). But considering the size of the eight
(it _is_ eight, at this point?) states known to be affected, it's
conceivable that a crackdown on a scale similar to the one in the UK
might actually solve this problem, since we essentially have extant
blueprints for a solution.

> As far as loot, I asked the
>family to forgo it for me this year

I did, too. I told everybody to pay their bills, that nothing larger
than six inches on a side was allowed in my home, and that I wanted a
Brooklyn Cyclones cap and a new president for Christmas.
