>OED says--the place of origin or manufacture, as
>sugar of Alisaunder (= Alexandria)

Sugar of Alisaunder is sugar from Alexandria; just as sugar Siprys or
Cipris refers to sugar from Cyprus. Sugar candi or candian, OTOH, can
either be sugar from Crete or another spelling of sugar-candy (clarified
crystallized sugar) depending on the spelling & usage.

>however farther down in the entry one finds
>the plant from which it is made

This section of the OED is discussing adjectives applied to sugar.
Alisaunder is mentioned under section "a"- place of origin or manufacture,
but not under section "e" - the plant from which it is made.

Regards,

Cindy
