It is an apocryphal tale that the first ring doughnuts were produced by
Hansen Crockett Gregory of Camden, Maine in 1847. Some of the tales make
him a sea captain, others a baker's apprentice and still others a boy
watching his Mother fry doughnuts.

According to John Mariani's Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, similar
ring cakes were produced by the Pilgrims in 1620.

The term "doughnut" supposedly first appears in the work of Washington
Irving in 1809. Irving was referring to the Dutch "olykoecks" (oily cakes),
holeless doughnuts, which were still made in New York.

What we refer to as a doughnut is probably a derivation of the German fried
pastries introduced to the US via the Pennsylvania Dutch.
