Actually, the "judges" decided that the young couple, who got married
on the show, and the older couple, who were having some marital
problems, both might have made it to spring.

But the spoiled SoCal family would definitely not have. They were the
ones - adult woman and teen-girls (one a cousin) - who HAD to have
make up, so they tried to make mascara. Like you need mascara in an
isolated frontier cabin. They did other stuff bass-ackwards - among
other nutso things, the father and young son decided to move to town,
leaving the wife and teen girls behind. They also cheated and broke
rules (such as getting modern stuff out of the local town dump), so
they got "in trouble" for that, too.

The father got freaked out because he started a bit pudgy and lost
weight while doing hard physical labor. Doh! And he wondered why he
was dizzy while working out in the hot sun - when he was dehydrated.

I took one look at him, listened to his description of his symptoms
and knew - hydrate! hydrate!

He was some sort of exec, IIRC. Sheesh.

The losers were also the family that, for their one allowed bit of
19th c. high tech, brought a still and made some sort of rot gut to
sell and make extra money - and they did make it.

All the families were allowed one big of tech, up to a certain amount
of money/ or space / or weight. I don't recall what the young couple
brought (metal nails? and window glass?). The older couple was very
cool and brought a camera (big ole late 19th c. box on a tripod, of
course).
