No, it's a specific chemical reaction between the slime on their bodies and 
the copper.  If I remember correctly, it creates something like a small 
electrical charge :-) Something they definitely don't want to deal with.
I used to get a magazine called Kitchen Garden, and that was one of their 
organic suggestions for dealing with slugs.
