FWIW, I now find that although I've never set anything to send out html
or anything else but plain text, apparently the mail client for Mac OS
X (henceforth known as "Mail") has an option to send out mail in RTF
format. While I was careful not to send out html (and therefore assumed
plain text was going out), I did not think to uncheck the RTF option.

Pretty disgraceful for someone who dislikes Microsoft as much as I do,
I know, but I've since corrected this and am reasonably sure that I'm
now on plain text.

But I suppose it's possible that the RTF portion could have appeared to
be an attachment, as this seems to happen frequently in the case of
html mail.
