It's definitely supposed to be pudding-like.

Have you got rice flour? It works a whole lot like modern cornstarch -- in
fact, I use it one-for-one when I'm making things for a corn-allergic
friend -- so if you know how to make (or have a recipe for) a cornstarch
pudding you can use the same proportion of starch to liquid.
