Take a look at moussaka.  I don't happen to have a recipe handy, but there are a number of variants on the web.  Most use a tomato sauce and a custard-like filling between the layers.

Although moussaka is similar to her son's description, it does not usually contain pasta.  (Unless by "lasagna", he simply meant a layered casserole.)
