You're both right (what else would we expect?!)

The original bergamot is a citrus fruit (Citrus Bergamia), along the lines
of the oranges you see on mini orange trees (though not the same). Oil of
bergamot which is used in cosmetics and in aromatherapeutic preparations
comes from the citrus.

Bee balm, Monarda didyma and other Monarda species, is a North American
herb used for tea by early settlers. It's gorgeous.

There's another thing called bergamot in Britain, which is what we call
orange bergamot mint, mentha citrata.
