At the last feast we attended there was mac & cheese and chicken
nuggets provided for the children.  As it turned out though, my 5 year
old ate much more of the period food than he did of the "kids" food.

... of course he also likes curried spinach, so he's not really a
typical child.

I think this is one of those "You reap what you sow" kind of things.
If you always feed kids hot dogs and chicken nuggets then that's what
they're used to.  If you feed them a wide variety of foods and often
expose them to new foods and spices then they'll be more likely to try
new foods.
