[Sca-cooks] wine question

i am doing a few experiments with pickled eggs........ (details in a second
email) and i need a "period" wine.
i have references to preserving meat and eggs in "wine" and i am trying to
duplicate that.

so...... what wine can i buy, for not too much money, that might have been
used to preserve meat or eggs?
would it be red wine or white? dry? more like a red Zinfendel? what???
