There are two simple solutions to that one. One is having an above the
salt/below the salt feast. The other is that if they're so broke, but still
going to events, they can eat their own PBJs off board.

Sorry, but I have very little sympathy with people who think that we should
provide them with a free ride. If they're that broke, they can stay home-
that's what I did, until Rob and Margali decided to help me out, and now I'm
busting my ass to get in a position to pay them back.
