Gimli, or Gimle, is a place name in Norse mythology. On Gimle was built the
most beautiful house in the world, roofed with gold and brighter than the
sun. Gimle would stand when both heaven and earth had perished, and there
all good and just men would live forever after.

So it is no wonder that the Icelanders who emigrated to Manitoba in the late
19th century chose this name for their main town in the new world; to them
the name more or less meant "paradise".
