Yes.  Hazelnuts were available on both sides of
the Atlantic.  The European Hazelnut is native to
Italy, Greece and Asia Minor.  Another variety is
native to England. The earliest mention was
Theophrastes in the 4th century BC.  

When the Pilgrims came to America, they found a
small, native Hazelnut, but they decided that
their native English Hazelnut was superior and
sent home for seeds.  The majority of the
hazelnuts grown in the US are decendents of the
English Hazelnut.
