New world rabbits are either Sylvilagus (cottontails) or Lepus (hares)
depending on which one you are discussing-- jackrabbits and showshoe hares
are hares.

Sylvilagus has some of the features of both hares and rabbits-- the babies
are born blind and naked, but cottontails don't build burrows, but use
'forms' in the grass instead.
