One of the best summaries on the tomato is Andrew Smith's
The Tomato in America: Early History, Culture, and Cookery.
It goes into and describes the various misconceptions and associations
regarding the plant and the food.
Our article "Sixteenth Century Italian and Spanish Tomato References" by
Johnnae llyn Lewis, Helewyse de Birkestad, and Brighid ni Chiarain
can be found at
http://home.earthlink.net/~mkcooks/tomato16th.htm
and also in the
  http://www.florilegium.org/files/FOOD-VEGETABLES/16C-Tomato-art.rtf.
It also appeared in print over the summer in the Midrealm A&S
publication Artes Draconis.
