"Salting" ham and Pacific salmon to be hung up in a smoke house with sugar
instead of salt will lead to some interesting looks later in the year when
the Christmas get-together is held.

Never occurred to any of us to taste the outside and check the coating. Even
though canning sugar and preserving salt get used during the same season
(and about in the same quantities).

Grandma never lived it down. Even now, 30 years later, sooner or later
someone will ask if there's anymore "rock candy jerky' - but only if they're
more than a wooden-spoon distance away from Grandma.
