the problem with nearly all responses so far is that there is a presupposition that the Laurellate is arts related.

But what about those who do sciences or research? 
My self I produce very little in the way of artifacts that I can enter into any competition, though I am not shy about teaching.

what path do people like myself have to get to the laurellate?

The Purpose of the First Amendment is not to protect only
