I think you have probably hit on a big part of the reason.  I don't think
there was any confusion between the SCA and Olympics though (grin).  Just a
feeling that someone who make their living doing one of our "art" forms
would be able to out compete an "amateur".  Most merchants I've seen
wouldn't be considered for their wares because they aren't Laurel quality.
People often will not or cannot pay for Laurel Quality work.

Then there are the exceptions like Mark du Gaulker!
